Day 1: Keyword Research — Win the Right Terms

Most SEO effort dies at the first decision: choosing terms you cannot realistically win. Today you build a keyword research matrix that scores every candidate term on three axes, so your content calendar targets fights you can actually enter.

Mine Keywords from Free Sources

You need zero paid tools to build a strong list. Start with autocomplete: type your seed topic into the search bar and record the suggestions, then repeat with each letter of the alphabet appended. Harvest the related-searches block and the questions box on results pages. Add community sources — forum threads, product reviews, and support questions in your niche — where customers phrase problems in their own words. Aim for fifty raw candidates.

Score with the Three-Axis Matrix

Put candidates in a spreadsheet with three columns scored one to five. Relevance: how directly could this term lead to your product or goal? Winnability: search the term and look at who ranks — small sites and forum threads on page one signal opportunity, while big brands wall-to-wall signal a pass for now. Intent clarity: can you tell exactly what the searcher wants? Multiply the three scores and sort.

Match Intent Before Writing Anything

Every winnable term still has a required format. If the results show comparison lists, a comparison list is what searchers want; a product page will not rank there. Note the dominant format next to each keeper.

Action Step

Build your matrix today: gather fifty candidate terms from the free sources above, score all three axes, and shortlist the ten highest products. Write the required content format beside each of the ten.
