Most professionals bolt AI onto their work wherever a tool happens to suggest itself, which is why so many get scattered results. The better starting point is a map of your own working week, because AI fit is a property of your tasks, not of the technology.

Inventory a Typical Week

Write down what you actually produce and process across a normal week: documents drafted, messages answered, material read, meetings attended, decisions made, things reviewed. For each item, note roughly how long it takes and how often it recurs. This is ten minutes of honest listing, and nearly everyone is surprised by the shape of their own week when they see it written down.

Sort by Cognitive Type

Now label each item with the kind of thinking it needs: generating text from known material, condensing and extracting, transforming from one format to another, judging quality, or making decisions with stakes. The first three types are where AI assistance shines. Judgment and decisions stay yours, though AI can prepare the ground for them.

Find the Drudgery Inside the Craft

Skilled work is rarely uniform. Inside a valuable deliverable hide low value segments: formatting, restating background, assembling boilerplate, converting notes into prose. The map lets you see these segments precisely, and they are your entry points, because delegating drudgery frees attention for the parts only you can do.

Action Step

Build your weekly inventory today and label every item by cognitive type. Highlight the three items that combine high recurrence with generating, condensing, or transforming work. Those three are your candidates for the rest of this module.
