Every search has an intent, and every page on a store suits a particular kind of intent. Matching the two is the foundation of ecommerce SEO.
Intent Types
Informational searches seek knowledge ('how to clean leather boots'). Commercial investigation compares options ('best waterproof hiking boots'). Transactional searches want to buy ('men's leather chelsea boots size 10'). Navigational searches look for a brand or site.
Page Types
Category or collection pages suit broad commercial and transactional searches. Product pages suit specific transactional searches. Buying guides and comparisons suit commercial investigation. How-to articles suit informational searches and can link to relevant products.
Checking the Results Page
Before choosing a page type, search the phrase and look at what already ranks. If the results are mostly category pages, a blog post is unlikely to rank, and vice versa.
Action Step
Take 20 phrases related to your products, classify the intent of each, check the results page, and record which page type should target it.
